Nazeema

By Andrew Flaherty

Homebound girl
Full moon eyes
Night sky hair
Homebound girl
surrounded on all sides
by rough seas
like your native India.
Homebound girl
the darkness is
“palpable, black, and painted”
yet you shine like the Dawn
that will banish your cancer
“like a debt.”
Homebound girl
your poems are Vedas they
illuminate our classroom
in your absence
songs of friendship
with the page that listens
when no one else can.
Homebound girl
We listen for you
We see you in the sky
When we are afraid to speak.
